About this watch

Girard-Perregaux Gyromatic Oversize with Date, Tiffany & Co. Signed Dial, Circa 1965

DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE

In the 1960s Tiffany & Co. did not make watches. It chose them. The Fifth Avenue store worked as a curated boutique for the best Swiss houses, Patek Philippe, Rolex and Girard-Perregaux among them, and the pieces it took into inventory left with a second signature on the dial: Tiffany & Co., set beneath the maker's name. Tiffany ordered these in small batches to fill its own cases, so every co-signed reference exists in limited numbers, and some combinations exist in very few.

This is one of the few. Girard-Perregaux built the Gyromatic as its automatic line of the period, and most of the examples that surface today are gold filled, time only, or fitted with a light dial. This one combines a stainless steel case, the automatic date layout and a factory black dial, all under a Tiffany signature. You will not find a long list of direct comparables for it, because there are not many to find.

The movement tells the rest of the story. It is stamped GMX, the United States import code for Girard-Perregaux, which places this watch on the official import route into the American market, where it was retailed and dual-branded by Tiffany. The Tiffany dial and the import code agree with each other, and that agreement is what you want to see on a co-signed piece. An archive extract has been requested from Girard-Perregaux.
