About this watch
DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE
Here is an exceptional and beautifully preserved vintage Certina Manual-Wind Dress Watch Reference 81101, dating precisely to 1953.
This specific example stands out as an incredibly honest mid-century Swiss timekeeper, representing the golden age of independent watch manufacturing. Powered by the highly regarded, in-house Certina Caliber 320 movement, this piece offers a phenomenal blend of clean post-war geometry, a completely untouched original dial displaying a gorgeous tropical champagne patina, and incredible vintage character.
While Certina was a prominent manufacturer during the 1950s, finding examples in all-stainless steel that have escaped poorly executed dial restorations or heavy case polishing makes this an uncommon and highly desirable "honest survivor" for vintage collectors.
CONDITION & COMPONENTS
Overall Grade: Excellent / Unrestored (Dial) | Very Good / Sharp Geometry (Case)
Originality: original factory parts matching period-correct specifications. The hands, dial, case, and mechanical components are fully verified for this 1953 production batch. NOTE - crown has been replaced
Key Wear Notes: Honest micro-scratches from careful, historic wear are present across the steel case. The winding crown has been replaced - which is not unusual.
MOVEMENT & PERFORMANCE
Caliber Engine: Hand-wound, in-house Certina Caliber 320 engine (15 Jewels).
Service History: Fully Serviced
Metrics: [Placeholder : timegrapher accuracy data, e.g., +15s/day / untested]
Functionality: The movement is visually pristine and highly clean, showing no signs of moisture intrusion, rust, or component oxidation on the bridges or gears. The movement architecture boasts beautiful mid-century Swiss finishing, featuring rhodium-plated bridges with clean, hand-beveled edges. It features the crisp factory stamping "CERTINA 320" and "SWISS 15 JEWELS" directly on the train bridges.
DIAL & HANDS
Variant & Condition: Correct original factory-born silver/cream dial featuring applied gold-tone Arabic numerals (at 12, 2, 4, 8, and 10) and alternating faceted dart indices. It includes a beautifully recessed, circular-grained subsidiary seconds register at the 6 o'clock position.
Lume & Aging: Clean, non-luminous dress dial displaying an honest, uniform warmth and a gorgeous golden "tropical" patina across the surface. Fully correct "CERTINA" signature centered below the 12 o'clock marker and "SWISS MADE" centered at the very bottom edge.
UV Reaction: Non-luminous dial; no reaction under UV light.
Hand Set: All hands are fully original and period-correct. The hour and minute hands are elegant, polished gold leaf (alpha) variants, paired with a matching delicate micro-hand for the sub-seconds register.
CASE, BEZEL & CRYSTAL
Dimensions: 33.5 mm Diameter (excluding crown) | 36.0 mm Diameter (including crown) | Approx. 11.0 mm Thickness (including crystal) |
Case & Lugs: Solid, high-grade Stainless Steel case architecture featuring classic, slightly downturned lugs that hug the wrist beautifully. Unlike a vast majority of 1950s watches made of plated brass, this solid steel case has completely escaped the flaking, pitting, or green corrosion typical of base-metal pieces, retaining its sharp factory lines.
Components: The interior of the snap-on caseback houses the correct, matching factory stamps. The exterior of the lower caseback bears the crisply stamped 5-digit reference number 81101 (denoting the Caliber 320 stainless steel chassis framework) and the unique 7-digit production serial number 2325438.
Bezel & Crystal: Integrated smooth stainless steel fixed bezel. Fitted with a high-domed acrylic crystal that provides the necessary clearance for the vintage hand stack while adding magnificent visual depth to the patinated dial beneath.
Case Back: The exterior stainless steel snap-on back is structurally sound, showing honest wear from wrist friction but free of deep tool gouges or personal engravings.
STRAP & ACCESSORIES
Lug Width (Strap Size): 18 mm , 10mm thickness 33.5 mm w/o crown (standard vintage size)
Hardware: Fitted with a matching vintage-style tang buckle.
Fit & Wear: Paired with a premium, vintage-style leather strap that perfectly accentuates the warm mid-century champagne tone of the dial and the bright steel of the case.
COLLECTOR NOTES
Provenance & Box/Papers: No box or papers.
Vintage Disclaimer: This is a vintage, pre-owned timepiece with over 70 years of history. It is an honest, used object and is not cosmetically perfect. It displays character marks, micro-scratches, and component aging consistent with its era. Furthermore, true to its early 1950s production, this movement is a traditional non-shock-protected layout (lacking modern Incabloc systems), meaning it must be treated with care against hard impacts or drops. Please perform due diligence by carefully examining all high-resolution photographs and macro images provided to ensure this piece fully meets your personal condition standards before making a purchase.
