About this watch
LeCoultre "Disco Volante" (Flying Saucer), Ref. 1015, circa 1950
DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE
An exceptional and highly sought-after vintage LeCoultre "Disco Volante", or Flying Saucer, reference 1015 dating to approximately 1950 to 1951.
This example is a rare oversized dress watch variant in 14k gold, one of the most distinctive mid-century modernist designs LeCoultre produced for the American market. Powered by the manual-wind Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 480/CW, it blends bold mid-century geometry, an honest unmolested gilt dial, and real vintage character.
Scholars place the production lifespan of this specific reference configuration at only a few years, roughly 1950 to 1953, likely yielding total production in the low hundreds, typically estimated between 250 and 500 units rather than thousands.
CONDITION & COMPONENTS
Overall Grade: Excellent / Unrestored Very Good / Sharp Geometry (case and bezel).
Originality: 100% original factory parts matching period-correct specifications. Hands, dial, case, and crown are all verified for this early 1950s production batch.
Key Wear / Parts Notes: Honest micro-scratches from historic wear are present. The exterior caseback shows normal light wear from decades of wrist friction, with the hallmarks still perfectly clear. This is expected and authentic for a true unpolished example.
MOVEMENT & PERFORMANCE
Caliber Engine: Hand-wound Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 480/CW, 17 jewels.
Service History: Fully Serviced.
Metrics: Please inquire.
Functionality: Movement is visually pristine and clean, with no signs of corrosion, oxidation, or component mismatch on the bridges or gears. Bridge layouts and engraving architecture match factory specification, carrying the seven-digit Swiss serial 704847, dating movement production to 1949, and the correct US market "VXN" import stamp.
DIAL & HANDS
Variant & Condition: Correct original champagne gilt dial with an Arabic 12, applied gold indices, and the distinctive dot-and-dash outer track. Recessed sub-seconds register at 6 o'clock.
Lume & Aging: Clean non-luminous dress dial showing honest, uniform warmth and a golden patina. Correct "LE COULTRE" signature centered below 12 o'clock.
UV Reaction: Non-luminous dial, no reaction under UV light.
Hand Set: All hands original and period-correct. Hour, minute, and sub-seconds hands are the polished gold dauphine variants correct for this reference.
CASE, BEZEL & CRYSTAL
Dimensions: 37mm diameter excluding crown Approx. 9mm thickness including crystal. 16mm lug width , 8.25mm case thickness.
Case & Lugs: Solid 14k yellow gold "C-case" architecture with integrated hooded lugs. The wide flat polished bezel retains its knife-edge profile and sharp geometric angles, having escaped the aggressive buffing and rounding seen on most surviving dress models. The interior caseback is fully stamped "Cased and Timed in U.S.A. by LeCoultre" alongside the "Axel Bros" signature and reference 1126.
Components: The exterior lower caseback carries the correct stamped "14K GOLD" purity mark and the small Axel Brothers, Apex Watch Case Mfg. Corp., shield hallmark. The winding crown sits integrated into a factory recessed cutout on the mid-case profile.
Bezel & Crystal: Pristine wide polished gold fixed bezel. High-domed acrylic crystal giving clearance for the hand stack while keeping a slim profile on the wrist.
Case Back: Exterior snap-on back is structurally pristine, with no deep tool gouges, heavy scuffs, or personal engravings.
STRAP & ACCESSORIES
Fit & Wear: Fitted on a New premium vintage-style lizard leather strap that plays off the rich tone of the 14k yellow gold case.
