About this watch

Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3468, 18K Yellow Gold, 1966

DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE

The Calatrava is the watch that taught the industry restraint. When Patek Philippe introduced the Ref. 96 in 1932, it stripped the dress watch down to a clean dial, a thin round case and nothing else, and every quiet luxury watch made since has been arguing with that decision. The Ref. 3468 is that idea at its most refined, produced through the 1960s in solid gold at a profile under 7mm.

What collectors chase in this reference is the purity. Two hands. No date, no seconds, no complication, nothing to read but the time. In an era when Patek was building perpetual calendars and chronographs, the 3468 was the piece that had nothing left to remove, and that is the harder thing to get right. The mid-1960s window is the one to own. The dials of this period were finished with a sunburst that ages into exactly the warm, uneven champagne tone that cannot be faked, and the cases still carry the short, sharply down-turned lugs that later, thicker Calatravas lost.

Add the caliber 23-300 and you have the argument. Patek adjusted this movement to heat, cold, isochronism and five positions, the top of its factory regulation ladder at the time, and stamped it with the Geneva Seal. It is one of the best time-only movements the brand ever made, in one of the last references thin enough to genuinely disappear under a cuff.

CONDITION & COMPONENTS

  • Originality: Unrestored. The dial has never been refinished and retains its original applied gold indexes and matching hands.

  • Key Wear Notes: Displays honest period speckling on the dial, the authentic aging collectors prioritize over a redial.

  • Caliber Engine: Manual-wind Patek Philippe Caliber 23-300, 18 jewels. Geneva Seal struck on the train bridge.

  • Regulation: Stamped "Adjusted to Heat, Cold, Isochronism & Five (5) Positions," Patek's highest tier of factory regulation for the period.

  • Movement Serial: 1140522

  • Functionality: Hours and minutes. Clean, crisp running condition.

DIAL & HANDS

  • Variant & Condition: Original light champagne / silvered sunburst dial with applied yellow gold baton indexes. Untouched surface, never refinished.
