About this watch

This is a Rare Bird. An exceptionally rare and highly collectible variant of the Universal Genève Altesse, dating to 1967 based on its 2.57M serial number. While most mid-century Altesse models feature standard Roman numerals or simple stick markers, this incredibly rare execution features an exquisite champagne dial adorned with archaic Chinese Seal Script hour markers (Tensho in Japan), originally produced in highly restricted numbers for the East Asian market. It is an absolute standout piece for collectors of uniquely dialed, golden-era Swiss dress watches.

CONDITION & COMPONENTS

  • Overall Grade: Unrestored (Dial) | Very Good / Strong Geometry (Case)

  • Originality: Original factory parts matching period-correct specifications. The hands, dial, case, and mechanical components are fully verified for this 1967 production batch. NOTE - crown has been replaced.

  • Key Wear Notes: Honest micro-scratches from careful, historic wear are present across the gold-plated case. The winding crown ia an aftermarket replacement, common for this reference.

MOVEMENT & PERFORMANCE

  • Caliber Engine: Hand-wound, ultra-thin in-house Universal Genève Caliber 1-42 engine (17 Jewels).

  • Service History: Service history unknown; winding smoothly and keeping good vintage time.

  • Metrics: [Placeholder: timegrapher accuracy data, e.g., +20s/day / untested]

  • Functionality: The movement is visually pristine and highly clean, showing no signs of moisture intrusion, rust, or component oxidation on the bridges or gears. The movement architecture boasts beautiful mid-century Swiss engineering, measuring a mere 2.45mm thick. It features rhodium-plated bridges with clean finishing and crisp factory stamping directly on the train bridges.

DIAL & HANDS

  • Variant & Condition: Ultra-rare original factory-born brushed champagne dial featuring painted archaic Chinese Seal Script (Tensho) hour markers representing numbers 1 through 12. Produced exclusively in restricted numbers for East Asian markets (primarily JDM/Hong Kong).

  • Lume & Aging: Clean, non-luminous dress dial displaying an honest, uniform warmth and a gorgeous golden aesthetic across the surface. Fully correct "UNIVERSAL GENEVE" signature centered below the 12 o'clock marker and "SWISS" centered at the very bottom edge.

  • UV Reaction: Non-luminous dial; no reaction under UV light.

  • Hand Set: All hands are fully original and period-correct. The hour and minute hands are elegant, minimalist blackened stick variants designed to perfectly contrast the champagne dial and mirror the calligraphic weight of the Seal Script markers.

CASE, BEZEL & CRYSTAL

  • Dimensions: 30 mm Diameter (excluding crown) | 7.5 mm Thickness (including crystal) | 16 mm Lug Width

  • Case & Lugs: 20-Micron Yellow Gold-Plated case architecture over a stainless steel base framework. Features classic, slightly downturned lugs that hug the wrist beautifully. The gold plating remains strong across the case, showing very good coverage with minimal edge wear. Some plating shows signs of wear near the numbers 7 thru 9 appear and a minor case nick near the 6 numeral. (see photos)

  • Components: The interior of the snap-on caseback houses the correct, matching factory stamps. The exterior of the lower caseback bears the crisply stamped reference number 542101 / 16 (denoting the ultra-thin Altesse gold-plated framework) and the unique 7-digit production serial number 2579322.

  • Bezel & Crystal: Integrated smooth gold-plated fixed bezel. Fitted with a flat acrylic crystal that complements the watch's ultra-slim design profile while maintaining a flush, elegant wrist presence.

  • Case Back: The exterior stainless steel snap-on back is structurally sound, showing honest wear from wrist friction but free of deep tool gouges or personal engravings, leaving the reference and serial stamps fully legible.

STRAP & ACCESSORIES

  • Hardware: Fitted with a matching vintage-style tang buckle.

  • Fit & Wear: Paired with a premium, vintage-style leather strap that perfectly accentuates the warm mid-century champagne tone of the dial and the gold-plated case.

RARITY & COLLECTIBILITY

  • Archaic Seal Script Dial: The overwhelming majority of Ref. 542101 models featured standard Roman numerals or stick markers. This specific dial execution showcases stylized hour indices painted in ancient Chinese Seal Script (Tensho), a calligraphic script dating back over two millennia.

  • Regional Exclusivity: This layout was never part of Universal Genève's standard global catalog. It was produced exclusively as a highly localized, limited variant for target East Asian markets like the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) and Hong Kong, making surviving examples exceedingly rare in the West.

  • Horological Pedigree: From an era when Universal Genève competed neck-and-neck with the world's finest watchmakers, this piece represents peak mid-century ultra-thin mastery. Its micro-thin profile and scholarly, ink-on-paper aesthetic make it a highly sought-after design icon coveted by high-end vintage curators.

COLLECTOR NOTES

  • Provenance & Box/Papers: No box or papers.

  • Vintage Disclaimer: This is a vintage, pre-owned timepiece with nearly 60 years of history. It is an honest, used object and is not cosmetically perfect. It displays character marks, micro-scratches, and component aging consistent with its era. True to its late-1960s ultra-thin dress layout, this delicate movement must be treated with care against hard impacts, drops, or water exposure. Please perform due diligence by carefully examining all high-resolution photographs and macro images provided to ensure this piece fully meets your personal condition standards before making a purchase.
