About this watch
Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust Ref. 1603, Pie-Pan Dial, Circa 1974
DESCRIPTION & SIGNIFICANCE
In 1945 Rolex marked its fortieth year by putting a date on the dial. The Datejust was the first self-winding wristwatch with a date that changed automatically at midnight, shown in a window at three o'clock. Rolex later laid a magnifying Cyclops lens over that window, and the layout became the one every date watch since has been measured against.
The Ref. 1603 is the Datejust of the 1960s and 1970s, the reference that carried the model through its longest and most consistent run. It pairs a stainless steel Oyster case with an engine-turned white gold bezel, and the chronometer-certified caliber 1570 inside is one of the most dependable automatic movements Rolex ever produced.
The dial is the reason to look closely at this one. On a pie-pan dial the center sits raised and the outer track slopes down toward the edge, like an upturned pie pan. That angled edge catches light differently from the flat center as the watch moves, and it gives the dial a depth a flat dial does not have. Rolex offered it on the Datejust for a limited period, and collectors now look for it specifically.
The early 1970s is a good window for the reference. The 1570 had gained its hacking seconds by then, so the watch can be set to the second. Production ended in 1977, when quickset-date movements replaced it.
